3. HST Webinar: What You Need to Know to be Ready

The Ontario Nonprofit Network  is hosting a 2-hour webinar on February 18, 2010 to help nonprofits and charities prepare for the new Harmonized Sales Tax. As a result of two sold out HST seminars last week, ONN has invited tax expert, Jonathan Spencer, C.A., back for another outstanding presentation. While the HST does not come into effect until July 1, 2010, nonprofits and charities need to have their new accounting systems in place for May 1, 2010 when transitional rules come into effect.

This webinar will lead members through the key elements of the HST, help organizations understand how the HST will affect them and develop a plan for the necessary changes. The seminar will be of interest to Executive Directors, staff and board members charged with implementing the HST at their organizations and communicating the impact of the new tax. For more information and to register, visit the website.

4. Recession 'Over'? Not-For-Profits Still Struggling

The Ontario Trillium Foundation surveyed 100 Ontario not-for-profit organizations to see how they were faring in the wake of the recession. It found that while most organizations were still feeling the aftershocks, they were also still surviving. What is fascinating is many organizations have, in fact, used the downturn to launch new partnerships and explore alternative revenue streams leading them to seek innovative solutions for their fight to continue on. Read the full report here.

Presentations have become a standard way of communicating to our audiences.  Organizations use it to showcase new programs and services, to provide updates and information on activities, or to convince someone to come on board. Yet many of us know what it’s like to watch someone go through slide after slide and not feel excited nor engaged by their presentation. With the recent wave of people who have switched over to Macs this is intensified by the fact that very few people know how to use Keynote beyond the templates already set forth.

So how do you make a memorable presentation that keeps everyone on the edge of their seat? Come find out! TechSoup Canada will introduce you to Keynote on Mac OS X and show you how to transform simple slides into a cinematic experience for your audience. If you have any questions, please contact Yumi Hotta at yumi@socialinnovation.ca

The real test of facilitating or leading a group happens not when groups are in harmony, but when differences emerge. Many of us tend to contract, to take one side over another, to want to control or direct group response when this happens. How do we stay open to the transformational learning possible in times of conflict? This one-day primer on facilitating group differences offers a framework and different techniques and tools for what to do when things get rocky.

This program is intended to build on and deepen facilitation skills and is for anyone in situations where skillful navigation of differences is required whether in a unionized environment, school classroom, coalition process, or other organizational context. Prior experience facilitating is required or completion of the Authentic Facilitation Level I. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions concerning this prerequisite.
