Kitchener’s High Tech Tannery District

RAW, one of Toronto’s fastest growing architecture studios, has given Kitchener’s historic Tannery District a high tech make-over transforming a former leather boot factory into a vibrant hub for the area’s rapidly developing technology sector. Winning national and local awards, RAW has refurbished major portions of the buildings’ aging infrastructure. A magnet for industry growth, the revamped Tannery District features a 28,000 sq ft media hub with public space for digital media demonstrations, and large interactive ‘caves’ where researchers can use immersive 3D visualization technology to test out new content and programs.

The Tannery District is one of the most ambitious and sustainable adaptive-reuse projects of a heritage site in Canada, showing how post-industrial mid-sized cities can restore vibrancy to their downtown cores, while preserving history and character through strategic planning and design. And its success is clear with new tenants, including Google, Communitech, and Desire2Learn.

RAW was invited this year by the Interior Design Show to design and create the IDS 12 entrance. Visitors will have an opportunity to engage directly with the unique work of RAW, in collaboration with Mark Tholen. Visitors will be seduced as they enter the IDS 12 exhibit floor with a dramatic felt-strip curtain entryway that doubles as a digital projection screen for visitors to interact with.
