Place:

Villa Widlund by Claesson Koivisto Rune

Swedish design firm Claesson, Koivisto, Rune is internationally acclaimed for their progressive yet elegant approach in architecture to product design. Notable projects include the recently completed Villa Widlund, a vacation home located on the west coast of the Baltic island of Öland in Sweden, designed to act as a funnel of light, space and sea view. The white precast concrete box is "corsetted" in the middle giving the house a unique character, while also functionally demarcating the space between the private two-storey bedroom in the rear from the communal double ceiling-height space located in the front. Refined architectural details include unfinished solid white surfaces rendering a glowing effect; and joints between concrete elements that rather than interfere with the architecture, become part of the building's geometry and expression.

Eero Koivisto joins the all-star line-up of design industry trailblazers at IDS 12 Conversations in Design where he will share the firm’s design process behind selected works.

Rimova Patty Johnson

Product:

Rimowa’s Salsa Air Pearl Rose Collection

Whether for James Bond, Vanna White, or your next trip, there is no case lighter (4.2 to 8.2 lbs each), more durable, or more design-forward, than that of German luggage manufacturer RIMOWA. Infamous for its iconic grooves for over 113 years, RIMOWA’s North American headquarters and factory is now located in Cambridge, Ontario. With the introduction of their patented Multi-wheel technology coupled with their polycarbonate cases, RIMOWA has refined the way we travel. The Salsa Air is RIMOWA's lightest collection, and the limited edition Pearl Rose is a perfect combination of brawn and beauty, characterized with a pearlescent gold flaking yet strong enough to take on just about any luggage porter. Fittingly, Rimowa joins IDS 12 with a space entitled the Art of Travel. Designed and conceived by Sasha Josipovicz of Studio Pyramid and furnished by Italian manufacturer FLOU, this unique experience will recreate the ultimate hotel getaway for IDS 12 visitors. (In the interim, the cases are available at RIMOWA’S Toronto flagship store at 101 Bloor Street West or through select retailers for everyone on your holiday shopping list.)

Person:

Patty Johnson

From North to South America, Rajasthan to Botswana, and Mexico to Haiti, Toronto-based industrial designer Patty Johnson is a true citizen of the world advocating for sustainable, people-centered design. Patty takes her product design experience for large-scale manufacturers (including Nienkamper, Keilhauer and Sephora) and applies the same processes in communities throughout the developing world helping to improve the livelihood of artisans. When asked to compare her experiences working within these two seemingly contrasting areas, Patty reveals that the collaborative design process is essentially the same. Working with micro creative communities, has however profoundly changed the way she thinks about design into an extremely people-centered approach. Patty’s most recent collaboration is with two Canadian partners – TFO (Trade Facilitation Office) Canada and BrandAid. Based in Haiti, product development is inspired by their unique culture and history. The central focus is a collection called Vodunuvo of which a sample will be shown in the new IDS Platform feature exhibit Offsite/Onsite.
