Domison Showroom

Domison, Toronto

In the face of good, bad and otherwise, Thien Ta-trung of
Montreal-based Domison follows his instincts. In fact, the
designer/entrepreneur bets his career on it. He and his business
partner/sister My, opened a second showroom in Toronto earlier this
Spring. “After 10 years in Montreal, we thought it was time to bring
our design and style to Canada's biggest city. By having a store in
each city, we will be able to create a bridge between two often solitary
worlds, and help to exchange ideas and design between them.”

Like its Montreal-based counterpart, Domison offers up a hip and
contemporary furniture showroom which also regularly features a
design installation. Thien explains that “in everything we do, from our
Facebook page, website, ad campaigns, exhibits and installations, to our
retail outlets, our MAIN goal is to touch, inspire and elevate the senses.
Domison is all about life and culture.”

Having also personally relocated to Toronto, Thien observes that “each
city certainly has its particularities, but the number one difference is size.
The Toronto condo market requires much smaller furniture than in
Montreal. When units start at 350 sq.ft, it is hard to fit a 12'-long sectional…
and while overall, Toronto customers are more conservative than in
Montreal, there is also a market in Toronto who love design and who are
even more daring in their choices than Montreal.” And if the Ta-trung
siblings don’t have enough on their plates, they’re currently working on a
new range of products, an in-store gallery of work by Canadian designers,
a collection of books; and to top it off, the design of their IDS 2012 space.

Anita Modha + Jonathan Nodrick

Anita Modha and Jonathan Nodrick are the creative duo behind ROLLOUT, a firm specializing in surface design and custom wallpaper. Established in Vancouver, the firm opened their second studio in Toronto earlier this year. Most known for their bespoke line of digitally printed eco-conscious wallpaper, their work has been recently featured in a national window display campaign for Holt Renfrew; in a 10 year retrospective exhibit at The Museum of Australian Democracy, and the Cosmopolitan Hotel with the Rockwell Group.

Two studios in two cities at opposite ends of the country mean that the energetic pair can keep their fingers in all pies. Anita explains, “the economy in Toronto seems vibrant and it presents a completely different mindset and design cues –Vancouver tends to look towards simplicity, honesty of materials and nature, while Toronto appears to embrace a bold, rich diversity. We are in a great position to have experienced and be inspired by both.”

As Rollout continues to expand its relationships nationally and internationally, they also plan to give back to the next generation of renegade creative upstarts “…design/business mentorship has always played a part in our career”. In the interim, check out Rollout’s new work at Studio North at IDS 12 as well as their installation celebrating Studio North’s 10 year anniversary.

Rado. The White Collection

No stranger to the international design scene and following the successful 5.5 designed by Jasper Morrison, Swiss watch manufacturer RADO introduces The White Collection. The visionary founders of RADO pioneered the use of several materials and production methods in the watch industry, and have continued to develop extraordinary high-tech materials ever since. These new white timepieces add a contemporary twist to the white high-tech ceramic watches RADO first started producing back in the 90’s. The RADO Ceramica White with a silver or gold metallization dial is iconic and graphic. Recognized internationally for its design merit, the RADO Ceramica Digital Automatic has won the prestigious 2011 red dot design award in the product design category, and RADO will accept its award at the red dot gala on July 4th in Essen. Once again, RADO transforms a passion for incomparable surfaces into ultimate expressions of contemporary design.
